Yesterday I had the honour of walking my best friend down the aisle--I gave her away to her male partner. "Who gives this bride away?" "I do." Not only was I overcome with happiness for my best friend and her lucky partner but after the ceremony I was thinking a bit like a feminist. Brides are treated as a possession to be given away, even if I was her father I couldn't actually give her away. I do understand the importance of the traditional wedding ceremony for most people but it's good to think of how things such as these which contribute to the marginalization of a group of people and are quite often unquestioned. Attending a feminist wedding would be fun!
Since the wedding I've also been thinking like a nesting homosexual man. I haven't attended a same sex wedding but have been imagining how mine may look for quite some time--setting, location, colours, drinks, entertainment, etc. Some questions and ideas I have are: can we both have garters, just for fun? bouquet toss? how do we walk down the aisle? and so on. I've done a bit of research and have answered some of these questions, YAY! The Knot has some great info and really makes gay weddings sound fun! After all we're less bound by traditional ways, we can be creative :).
You can expect to see more about gay weddings on my blog in the future... I hope I don't scare my boyfriend away, I'm only having fun and imagining an ideal!
